What's in it?

Organic Peppermint

Peppermint contains the substance rosmarinic acid, which has several actions that are beneficial in asthma and has abilities to neutralise free radicals. Rosmarinic acid has been shown to block the production of pro-inflammatory chemicals, such as leukotrienes. It also encourages cells to make substances called prostacyclins that keep the airways open for easy breathing.

Organic Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus has been used for its medicinal properties by herbalists from the Aboriginal, Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions. Modern herbalists and aromatherapists use eucalyptus to treat certain respiratory ailments, such as bronchitis and the common cold.

Organic Hyssop

A renowned tonic from ancient times, often mentioned in the Jewish Bible and in use for thousands of years as a healing herb. Hyssop is used to help combat the onset of the common cold. It is an expectorant, therefore aiding in relieving coughs and chest infections. It can also help maintain bodies’ natural defences against such illnesses, including sore throats, chesty coughs etc.

Not recommended during pregnancy.

Organic Coltsfoot

Western Herbalism and Traditional Chinese Medicine highly regard this herb. Apparently in 18th century France every well respected apothecary used a picture of the Coltsfoot flower as a symbol of their trade; this shows the popularity of the herb during this time in Europe. Both prescribe the herb as a remedy for sore throats and coughs. Even the Latin name for Coltsfoot has derived from its traditional usage with Tussil meaning ‘cough’ and ago meaning ‘depart’.

Not recommended for children and infants. Do not use during pregnancy. Do not use if you suffer from heart disease, liver disease or high blood pressure.

Organic Plantain

Not to be confused with the banana like plant that is well known for its use in Caribbean cooking, Plantago major is considered one of the best healing herbs on the planet. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Plantain was considered one of the nine sacred herbs by the Anglo Saxons who celebrated it as the “mother of all herbs”. One of the most popular traditional uses for this herb was to support lung health.

Organic Lungwort

Lungwort is a traditional herbal remedy with a wide range of possible health benefits. It is mostly used to treat respiratory disorders such as coughing, bronchitis, and asthma. While there is few scientific proof of its effectiveness, it has been used for several years and anecdotal evidence as well as analysis of its chemical constituents recommends it has a role to play.

Organic Liquorice root

Liquorice Root boasts a medicinal history going back thousands of years, with reports of it being consumed for its health benefits by the likes of Caesar, Alexander the Great and the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt.

Liquorice can increase the production of healthy mucous within the bronchial system. Whilst this may appear counterintuitive to a cough or a cold, the production of healthy phlegm actually keeps the respiratory system functioning well and prevents the old, sticky mucous from clogging up the respiratory tracts. This root can also fight off the viruses that cause respiratory illnesses as well as relaxing bronchial spasms.

Organic Catnip

Catnip is an anti-bacterial, which means it is great to take when you have a cold or when allergies set in. Hot catnip tea helps to bring down fevers, through sweating, and also acts as a decongestant as it loosens phlegm and soothes respiratory distress.

Organic Marshmallow root

In traditional herbal medicine, medicinal use of the Marshmallow root can be traced back to ancient Egyptian and Greek times. It was mentioned in Homer’s “Iliad” as a slippery herb and as such was used to coughs, sore throats and congestion.

Hailed as one of nature’s most effective cough remedies, Marshmallow root is a mucilage rich herb with “antitussive” (cough suppressant) properties. The mucilage from this root coats the throat, thus soothing irritation and soreness.

Lovage can act as an expectorant to clear out excess phlegm and mucus in your tracts. Additionally, eucalyptol, one of the primary soothing agents found in it, can reduce irritation and inflammation in the lungs, encouraging more rapid healing.

Tea time

Infuse 2 heaped teaspoons in water heated to 80°c, for 8 minutes. (To get the most out of this tea - especially Marshmallow - do not steep in boiled water)

Whole leaves take longer to infuse but it is definitively worth it!

Drink at least 3 times a day when unwell. Drink regularly to help prevent colds and coughs.

As coughing fits often happen or worsen in the evening or when we lay down in bed, it's best to drink a strong cup at least 30 minutes before going to sleep.

Crush or grind the herbs prior to use.

Make sure that all ingredients are well mixed. Lighter particles and powders tend to sink at the bottom of the packet.

Do not leave herbs to steep in water as this may result in a slightly bitter infusion.

Combo option

Herbs are powerful on their own but their magic also works synergistically - meaning that combined they can be even more powerful.
